Richard Pomper
Although I probably wouldn’t be considered a native Oregonian I have lived and worked in Eugene for more than 32 years. Eugene is the first place I’ve loved and wanted to live in my lifetime. I enjoy hiking the Ridgeline Trail, camping on the coast, and skiing in the Sisters. I have lived in the country, on acreage, raising kids and chickens. Lately, I have lived near downtown, enjoying city life, walking to restaurants, and movie theaters.
Professionally, I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Phillips University in California. I have helped thousands of couples through my 30 years of experience. I have been trained and certified in Gottman Couples Therapy, EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy), Hypnotherapy, Behavioral and Family Systems Therapy. I am a Federal DOT Qualified SAP(Substance Abuse Provider), and trained as a Life Coach and in ACT ( Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). Previously, I worked at Mckenzie Willamette Medical Center as Mental Health Evaluator.
I motivate and facilitate couples and individuals to accept personal challenges to help them lead rich and meaningful lives. My personal experience of 40 years of being together and married and raising two children, then being separated and divorced has taught me the trials and tribulations of relationships. Dealing with my own suffering has helped me understand the fragility of relationships. Fortunately, I was able to find a new partner in life, and create a successful companionship using many of the tools I teach.
I try to balance my work life with my interests outside of work. In my spare time, I am a woodturner, photographer, antique camera collector, hiker, bicyclist, reader, baker, and world traveler. Fortunately, I don’t do most of these interests simultaneously.
I relate to clients through compassion and humor. My own life journey has given me the incite for understanding and helping individuals and couples handle painful feelings and distressing thoughts more effectively. I am aware that clients may feel awkward coming to therapy for the first time, so I try to create a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment.
I deal with many kinds of emotional and relational issues, including but not limited to-life changes, addictive behaviors, anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, intimacy/sexuality, and mid-life crisis. I can help you create successful relationships, manage difficult emotions and cultivate compassion towards yourself and others.
Hopefully, I will be providing in-office therapy in the near future. Until then, I will continue to offer telehealth to couples and individuals who find it more convenient. If you would like to contact me, feel free to call me at 541-520-1535 or send me a message.
